The ever-bluring line between work/nonwork and teaching/nonteaching and office-hours/non-office-hours adds bits of labour here and there until the camel's back breaks from all the straw
I don't think it is the same-- although that's what I wrote-- I think it is different in character rather than amount.
In the past, the online Intro course section has been capped at 25 students. In the Fall term, the face-to-face sections capped at 60 students were simply moved online. These traditional age (new to university) students needed much more support than normal (eg, more email traffic etc.) I also spent considerable time uploading individual feedback to Moodle (eg, for assignments etc) (where normally assignments are returned in person). I am an experienced online instructor and online course developer and even so needed additional teaching support resources that were seemingly not available.
learning how to teach online, what techniques work and what do not; dealing with system issues - computer glitches, variability in basic resources for students re; computers/computer access; time zone issues; brain fog from being on a computer nonstop.
Much more time and effort to make assessments appropriate for online delivery
I have a well developed Moodle site ready to go, including tools for making assessment relatively straight forward. Without a proper Moodle site and developed resources, teaching online would be more difficult. Up front investment in well developed resources and effective use of communication tools like Yammer make things easier. Time to work smarter and not harder.
There are other factors associated with class solidarity and management, student retention and investment, student focus -- effectively all the aspects of people-being-people with each other have been co-opted.

online is an easier process for faculty once you learn how to navigate Moodle and Collaborate - the set up time is quicker, student interactions can be scheduled at the students' convenience and schedule, material for subsequent terms can be easily transferred from Moodle with minor updates for the current semester; students have access to all materials at the start of term which provides control for both students and faculty of term requirements; it is simply an easier and less time consuming teaching methodology once the learning curve for online technology is flatteneds

The workload is about the same, but distributed differently.
I do not find this question clear 🙁 However the question below could use an "other" category. The continued delivery f online courses would be a fine idea if the conitions for such delivery were consonant with the extra investment. For example, if a term could be conducted off campus with online deliveries, that might be appealing under particular circumstances. However, the two forms are not interchangeable in terms of effort in/effort out
